THE 2020 GUIDE TO PARENTHOOD
Happy New Year from The California Beach Co! As we walk into an entirely new decade, we want to encourage you with our signature tips for taking on parenthood in the best way possible for the next 10 years.
You heard everyone say that there’s nothing easy about becoming a parent, but we do our best to prepare for this walk of life. Raising a human is no joke! There’s also no one-way to parenting, but there are some signature tips that we can all take from to thrive as the best parents we can be!
What will your family look like in 10 years?
We encourage you to ask yourself this question: what will your family look like in 10 years? Our friends over at BeachSheetz shared their perspective on family culture and how it’s different from family festivities. As we begin a new decade and end the holidays, it’s time to plan for what’s to come for our daily lives, so we can work towards it every minute to see the culture we want come 2030!
What do you need to start doing now to achieve the goals as a family that you long for in the future? There’s a difference between manifesting goals for your family and creating expectations.
Your kids are going to be kids.
They’re going to hurt you.
They’re going to make their own decisions that might hurt them.
You and your spouse won’t agree on everything.
He/She may hurt you.
Your plans will change.
How you handle your circumstances is what will determine the type of decade you have. So, with that in mind, here are our three major tips to help guide you in parenthood for 2020 and beyond.
1. Focus on crushing the little things.
Have you ever heard of the compound effect? It’s the simple act of small things, adding up over time to make a big impact. Saying thank you when your kids clean the dishes goes a long way. Kissing your spouse every time they come home from work goes a long way. Letting go of the small things that typically bother you will go a long way. Create a household that embraces the good and gives thanks. Focusing on the little bits of good will make all the “bad” that arises not seem so bad.
2. Show your appreciation.
As I said above, appreciation goes a long way in creating a healthy and happy family dynamic. It also costs nothing to be thankful! Remember to thank your children and spouse for everything. Show appreciation and encouragement when they do something right and when they accomplish something big. Not only will their confidence soar, but they’ll walk with a sense of purpose and know that they are loved.
3. Listen more than you speak.
This is one we like to throw on our kids, but we have to practice what we preach. This is the hardest thing to do as a parent and as a husband/wife. Hearing the other person out during a conflict, argument, or disagreement is the best thing you could ever do for your family. Being heard feels just as good as being appreciated. Be sure to listen with an open mind before opening your mouth. Not only will this influence your kids to do the same, but it’ll let them know it’s okay to have differences and to share their side of the story.
