There’s no greater feeling than when your child wants to cuddle up next to you and spend time with you. If you have a toddler, then you know these moments are few and far between. In this stage of life, your child is discovering their abilities and finding out that they are capable of lots of things… which can be frightening to us, parents.

One thing will always remain true: your child still enjoys being close to you at this age. They will always have their moments of sweetness and we suggest soaking it up like a sponge every chance that you can get! A great way to incorporate more of this into your relationship is to start encouraging reading time.

How to Make Your Child Love Reading Time

It’s important not to force reading time but when they allow you to introduce it, make it fun and memorable so they’ll want to do it again. You might not get through the entire book in one sitting- instead of getting frustrated, appreciate the time you had with them and move on to another activity.

This may happen at the beginning of introducing reading time; only because they aren’t used to the process. If this continues to happen every time you go to read, don’t immediately make the assumption that your child doesn’t like reading or they don’t have the attention span to care. It’s probably because of the way you’re reading to them or what you’re reading to them!

You have to be engaged, entertaining, and enthusiastic while reading the story. Allow them to touch the pages and point out the things that catch their attention. When the story builds, your tone of voice should build with it, and depending on the subject at hand, role-play a little! For instance, if the book is talking about the character getting tickled, tickle your child to make it more fun!

Five Books Every Toddler Needs

Now that you have a clear understanding of why reading time with your child is important, we’ve linked our five favorite books for toddlers below. The best part about our list is that each book is set for a different time of the day that will reconcile with your child during that time. It’s about keeping them entertained and excited about reading time so depending on the time of day that you read to them, the book should correlate to that time, too!

1. Best Book for Morning Time: If You Give a Moose a Muffin

This book is sure to make your little one giggle! What better way to start off the morning than with happy, carefree laughs? It will also get your child ready for breakfast since it’s muffin-themed. If your child likes this book, there are several sequels with different animals and themes! The first edition is If You Give a Mouse a Cookie!

2. Best Book from Daycare: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

It’s always good for your child to implement the things that they are learning at Daycare at home, too! It’ll excite your child when they start to see similarities in their day-to-day worlds. This will also improve their behavior during reading time at school! This is a book in most toddler classrooms but next time you pick up your little one from school, ask their teacher a popular book that they are currently reading in class and buy it for at home!

3. Best Book for Naptime: The Napping House

The Napping House is a classic! This book may bring back memories of your own if you’re an 80’s baby! What better way to relax your toddler into naptime? By reading or listening to The Napping House. It’s one of those books that just gets you in the mood for rest. Your child will love all the crazy pictures, too!

4. Best Book for Any Time: Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Whether it’s during playtime, first thing in the morning, or right before bed, this book is always a winner- really, any book by Dr. Suess is a solid choice. Your child will love the vibrant colors, exciting series of events, and unique characters within any Dr. Suess book. We personally love this specific book because it’s encouraging and inspirational.

5. Best Book Before Bed: Llama Llama Red Pajama

Every child loves a good story that rhymes. Llama, Llama Red Pajama is the perfect story right before bed. Not only is it a fascinating read, but it also makes your child feel like the characters in the story are heading off to bed, too! The more that you can convince your kids that everyone is doing what you want them to do, they’ll be more likely to do it, too! We’ll end with this: One Amazon reviewer says, “Llama Llama never disappoints mama!” Now that’s what we like to hear.
