Do You Know How Well Your Dog Knows You?
We all love our furry best friends, and it is hard not to think that you have the smartest dog out there. The reality is, your dog’s impressive intelligence might not be all fur parent-biased — your dog might be even smarter than you realize.
The Average Dog IQ
You may be surprised to hear that dogs actually have measurable IQs like humans do. I know, crazy right!? The average dog’s IQ is actually comparable to that of a two-year-old human toddler. Some people may find this surprising, while other dog owners may be thinking, “I’ve been saying my dog’s a genius for years and no one's listened!” 🤪
Here are some telltale signs that you’ve got a smarter than average pup! 💡
Your Dog is a Problem Solver
Is your dog constantly finding the hidden treats and escaping from their crate or fence? If so, this is a good sign that your dog is smart. Your dog’s problem-solving tendencies may seem to you like a common canine instinct but I think they deserve a little more credit than that! If you’re teaching your old dog new tricks with ease, they may be a furry little genius. 🧠
They Pick Up on Your Emotions
Does your dog know when you're upset? Puppy snuggles when you’re sad are a great example of emotional intelligence! When a dog senses their human’s emotions, they are displaying a high IQ.
This doesn’t just occur when you’re sad, it might also be displayed as your dog protecting you when you sense danger. 🐕🛑
Your Dog Isn’t the Only One Who’s Being Trained
That’s right, there is a good chance that your dog is training you — just like you’ve trained them. That might not be exactly what you want to hear but it’s the truth! If your dog nudges your hand and you know that means they want some scratchies, or you jump up as soon as they beg for treats, they’re using their intelligence to train you just like you did for them.
Being a dog owner is a reciprocal relationship anyways, so this should be expected. 🤷♀️
Some Dogs Get it, Some Don’t
At the end of the day, not every dog has an higher than average IQ. Some dogs just simply get it — they demonstrate impressive behaviors such as emotional intelligence and learning tricks quickly; while others don’t get it and they just act like normal dogs. So, if your dog isn’t a prodigy, don’t be upset. We can only expect so much out of our furry friends and the cute factor is ALWAYS on high. 😍🐶❤️
